This item appeared in the Berlin Weekly News-Record (a weekly publication for wider rural distribution) on Thursday March 23, 1899 on page 8 in the Elmira section:
Mr. Wm Randall is at the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital to undergo an operation...
The same day in the Berlin News-Record we read on page 1:
DIED AT THE HOSPITAL. William Randall died at the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital yesterday forenoon at the age of 51 years. He underwent an operation for a tumorous growth, from which he suffered for some time. He lived for many years in the vicinity of Elmira and was well known in North Waterloo. A family of eight grown up children mourn his death.
The next day, Friday March 24, 1899 in the Berlin News-Record there is a revision on page 1:
CAUSE OF DEATH WAS LUNG TROUBLE. The Record was misinformed as to the cause of death of the late William Randall notice of which appeared in yesterday's issue, and which stated an operation had been performed. As a matter of fact, no operation had been made. Deceased was brought to the Hospital about two weeks ago in a very emaciated condition, and in an advanced stage of lung trouble, from which he had been ailing for a long time, and which finally caused his death.
Also on Friday in the Berlin News-Record is the funeral notice:
OBITUARY. The funeral of the late William Randall will be held at St Jacobs at 1 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, after which the remains will be taken to Elmira for burial.
